CBCI Stands in Solidarity with Nepal After Deadly Glacial Lake Flood

New Delhi, August 29, 2026: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has expressed solidarity with the people of Nepal following a devastating Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) that has caused loss of life, injuries, displacement and widespread destruction.

Cardinal Poola Anthony, President of the CBCI, conveyed his condolences to the families of those who died and assured the people affected by the disaster of the prayers and solidarity of the Catholic Church in India.

In a message issued from New Delhi on August 29, the Cardinal said the Church in India stands close to the people of Nepal during this time of tragedy, entrusting those who died to the mercy of God and praying for the safe recovery of those who remain missing.

He also prayed for the success of ongoing rescue and relief operations, the speedy recovery of the injured and strength and hope for families displaced by the floods.

The disaster has caused extensive damage to homes, livelihoods and infrastructure, leaving affected communities facing an uncertain future.

The CBCI called upon Catholics across India to remember the victims and the people of Nepal during Sunday Mass on August 30. Parishes, religious communities and Catholic institutions have been urged to pray for those who died, the missing and the injured, as well as for families struggling with the consequences of the disaster.

The Conference also remembered emergency personnel and relief workers engaged in rescue operations, praying for their safety and strength as they continue to assist affected communities under difficult conditions.

“The Catholic Church in India remains united in prayer with the people of Nepal,” the CBCI said, asking God to bring comfort to those mourning, healing to the injured and courage to all those involved in rescue and relief efforts.

The message of solidarity comes as Nepal continues to confront the humanitarian consequences of the devastating floods.
