Cardinal Poola Anthony Leads Transgender Day of Visibility Celebration in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD, 2 April, 2025 – His Eminence Cardinal Poola Anthony led a groundbreaking celebration of the International Transgender Day of Visibility at the Hyderabad Archdiocese Social Service Society (HASSS), marking a significant moment in religious support for transgender rights in India.

As Chairman of HASSS, Cardinal Anthony spearheaded the event, which brought together 85 members of the transgender community, religious leaders, and advocacy groups. Officials confirmed that this was the first formal recognition of Transgender Day of Visibility by any organisation in Telangana.

"We must motivate ourselves with the spirit of 'I can do... I can also contribute positively to society,'" Cardinal Anthony told attendees during his keynote address. "Patience and perseverance will lead to greater opportunities."

To commemorate the occasion, Cardinal Anthony personally distributed dry ration kits containing essential food supplies to all transgender participants. He also inaugurated a free eye camp, where vision screenings were conducted, leading to the distribution of free prescription spectacles to those in need.

"This initiative addresses a critical healthcare gap often experienced by our transgender brothers and sisters," said Cardinal Anthony. "Proper vision care is essential for employment, education, and daily independence."

The event featured cultural performances by transgender artists and welcomed distinguished guests, including Rev. Fr. Y. Bala Reddy, Vice Chairman of HASSS, and Mrs. Mala, Founder of Queer Bandhu Parents Association. Transgender leaders Ms. Vasavi, Ms. Jasmin, and Ms. Srileka were also in attendance.

HASSS Program Coordinator N. Praveen Kumar highlighted the organisation’s efforts under Cardinal Anthony's leadership, which since 2023 have included ID card facilitation, entrepreneurship opportunities, medical camps, and vocational training for transgender individuals.

Fr. Madanu Anthony, Executive Director of HASSS, reaffirmed the organisation’s "unwavering support for the transgender community" and commitment to "empowering and uplifting trans individuals."

The International Transgender Day of Visibility, observed annually on 31 March since 2009, was founded by Michigan-based activist Rachel Crandall Crocker to create positive representation for transgender people beyond the memorial-focused Transgender Day of Remembrance.

Cardinal Anthony’s leadership in the celebrations marks a significant step in bridging religious outreach and transgender advocacy in a region where such institutional support has historically been limited.
