Bettiah Women Trained on Gender Justice and Child Protection

BETTIAH, September 23, 2026: Women from five parishes of the Diocese of Bettiah took part in a formation programme on gender justice, prevention of violence against women and child protection on September 20, focusing on practical ways to promote dignity, safety and accountability in Church and community life.

Organised by the Diocesan Women’s Commission, the programme was held as part of the implementation of Goal 2 of the CCBI Pastoral Plan 2033. It aimed to strengthen women’s understanding of their rights and responsibilities and encourage their participation in the life and mission of the Church.

Bishop Peter Sebastian Goveas of Bettiah, chairperson of the Diocesan Women’s Commission, stressed the dignity of every woman and child and called for a culture of respect, equality, protection and responsibility in the Church and society.

Mrs Sudha Clements, diocesan secretary of the Women’s Commission, welcomed the bishop and Mrs Bella Das, regional secretary of the Women’s Commission in Bihar. The programme opened with prayer and a welcome song presented by parish members.

The formation sessions addressed gender sensitisation, violence against women, the Prevention of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (POSH) Act, 2013, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

Mrs Bella Das led the sessions using group discussions, activities and practical exercises. Participants examined issues affecting women and children in families, communities and Church settings, with particular attention to recognising different forms of violence, creating safe spaces and identifying appropriate support mechanisms.

The participants concluded the programme by reaffirming their commitment to promoting awareness, protection, peace and social transformation in their respective parishes and helping build safer and more inclusive communities.
