Chennai, March 2, 2026: In a significant pastoral initiative, the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Madras–Mylapore inaugurated a Catholic Desk for the transgender community during a pastoral visit to Kadarkarai Sagaya Madha Church in Bharathiyar Nagar, Ennore, on February 26.
The Archbishop first blessed a newly constructed parish building before formally opening the dedicated ministry, the first of its kind initiated within the archdiocese to address the pastoral and social needs of transgender persons in Chennai.
The Catholic Desk aims to provide holistic support through job placement assistance and professional counselling services, reflecting the Church’s commitment to dignity, inclusion and compassionate accompaniment.
Parishioners expressed gratitude to the Archbishop for spearheading what many described as a pioneering outreach within the Indian Catholic Church, affirming the Church’s mission to serve all with pastoral care and practical support.
Those interested in participating in or benefiting from the ministry may contact Fr. Leo Joseph at 7904404373.
