Alpha Higher Institute of Religious Sciences Receives Vatican Approval

Thalassery, Kerala, March 13, 2026: The Alpha Higher Institute of Religious Sciences, functioning under the Archdiocese of Thalassery, has received official approval from the Dicastery for Culture and Education in Rome, marking a significant step in strengthening theological education in the region. With this recognition, the institute will offer a three-year theology degree programme—the Baccalaureate of Religious Science—in academic affiliation with Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bengaluru.


The announcement was made during a special function held in Thalassery, where Mar Joseph Pamplany, Archbishop of Thalassery, inaugurated the event by lighting the ceremonial lamp. He was joined by Archbishops Emeritus Mar George Valiamattam and Mar George Njaralakatt.


The formal declaration of the degree programme was made by Fr. Dr. Mathew Attumkal CMI, President of Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, Bengaluru. Fr. Dr. Joji Kakkaramattathil, Dean of the Tele Alpha Centre for Religious Sciences, presented a detailed report outlining the development of the institute and its academic initiatives.


The gathering was attended by several Church leaders and scholars who offered felicitations, including Fr. Dr. Philip Kavil, President; Fr. Dr. Paul Kochappilly CMI, Dean of the Theology Faculty at Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram; and Fr. Dr. Joy Kakkanattu CMI, the representative of the Bengaluru-based institute at Alpha.


Welcoming the participants, Fr. Dr. Mathew Kottukappally, Director of the Alpha Higher Institute, highlighted the institute’s mission to promote deeper theological formation among the faithful. Fr. Dr. Jacob Vennayappillil, representing the staff, proposed the vote of thanks.


According to the institute, experienced and distinguished faculty members will oversee the academic formation and conduct of classes at the Alpha Higher Institute. The programme will be open to a wide range of applicants, including religious sisters, catechists, retired professionals and others who have completed Plus Two education.


With the new Vatican approval and its academic collaboration with Dharmaram Vidya Kshetram, the Alpha Higher Institute aims to expand opportunities for structured theological study and deepen the understanding of religious sciences among lay faithful and Church workers.
