Youth Embrace Constitutional Values at Seminar in Chennai

Chennai, November 9, 2025: A dynamic seminar titled “We, the People of India” gathered more than 200 young participants at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Centre, Santhome, on Saturday. Organised by the Archdiocesan Youth Commission, Madras–Mylapore, in collaboration with Christ Focus and the Catholic Professional Forum, the one-day event aimed to deepen young people’s understanding of the values and vision of the Indian Constitution.

The seminar encouraged civic awareness among youth, guiding them to recognise their rights and responsibilities while motivating them to uphold democracy, equality, and justice in daily life.

Exploring the Spirit of the Constitution

The first session, led by Dr Fatima Vasanth, Academic Director of Patrician College of Arts and Science, focused on “Sensitising Youth on the Indian Constitution.” She emphasised that the Constitution is not merely a legal text but a living embodiment of India’s moral and social conscience.

Drawing on real-life examples, Dr Fatima explained the enduring relevance of constitutional provisions such as Article 14 (Right to Equality), Article 19 (Freedom of Speech and Expression), and Article 21 (Right to Life and Personal Liberty). She highlighted the importance of mental health, responsible digital behaviour, and the need to combat discrimination, urging youth to practise constitutional ethics in thought, word, and action.

Youth as Catalysts of Democracy

The second session, conducted by Dr Vincent Kamaraj, Dean of the School of Law at St Joseph University, explored “Youth as Catalysts in the Promotion of Fundamental Values of the Indian Constitution.” Tracing the historical roots of the Constitution, he reminded participants that it was born from a collective dream of a just and inclusive India.

He stressed that fraternity and unity in diversity must remain central to the country’s democratic ethos. “Our Constitution is not a relic of the past,” Dr Kamaraj remarked. “It is a guide for how we live, speak, and engage with one another every day.”

Both sessions concluded with an engaging interaction, where students and young professionals discussed themes such as social media ethics, equality, and civic responsibility.

Renewed Civic Commitment

The day culminated with participants taking a collective pledge to uphold the principles of justice, equality, and fraternity within their families, communities, and institutions.

The seminar “We, the People of India” proved to be a meaningful platform for young citizens to rediscover their role in shaping a democratic and compassionate society — one that continues to embody the ideals enshrined in India’s founding document.
