CBCI Congratulates Winners of Assembly Elections, Calls for Inclusive Governance

New Delhi, May 6, 2026: Extending its heartfelt congratulations to the people of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam, and Puducherry for the successful and peaceful conclusion of their recent assembly elections, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) also extended its warmest congratulations to all political parties and individual candidates who have emerged victorious in this crucial democratic exercise.

As new state governments take shape, the CBCI has called upon the newly elected leadership, irrespective of party affiliations, to steadfastly respect and uphold the Constitution of India. The bishops urged incoming governments to govern with transparency and prioritise inclusive policies.

The Conference emphasised that whichever party forms the government should dedicate its mandate towards the upliftment of the poor, the marginalised, the less advantaged, and minority communities. It stated that true national development can be realised only when progress reaches the most vulnerable sections of society.

Reaffirming its role in nation-building, the Catholic Church in India reiterated its commitment to collaborate with the government through its educational, medical, and social welfare institutions to promote the common good, peace, and prosperity of all citizens.

Highlighting this mission, Cardinal Poola Anthony, President of the CBCI, stated, "The true measure of a vibrant democracy lies not just in the successful conduct of elections, but in the steadfast commitment of elected leaders to serve the most vulnerable. We urge the new governments to work hand-in-hand with all institutions to build a more just, inclusive, and equitable India."

The CBCI also expressed hope that the elected representatives will be guided by wisdom, justice, and deep compassion as they embark on their responsibilities in public service and governance.
