Women Lead Key Session at CCBI National Synodal Assembly

Bengaluru, May 2, 2026: Women took centre stage at the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) National Synodal Assembly as the fourth thematic session was entirely led by women, reflecting the growing role of women in shaping the Church's synodal journey in India.

The session, dedicated to integral ecology and inclusive development, was moderated by Olinda Timms and featured presentations by Jean D'Cunha and Arlene Manoharan. Their leadership and expertise highlighted the vital contribution of women in guiding the Church's reflection on some of the most pressing challenges facing society today.

Jean D'Cunha addressed the ecological crisis through the lens of integral ecology, drawing on the teachings of Pope Francis and Laudato si'. She called for urgent environmental action, reminding delegates that the Church must respond to both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.

Arlene Manoharan examined the realities of economic inequality, noting that rapid growth often masks deepening poverty and exclusion. She urged the Church to champion a development model rooted in justice, dignity, and equitable participation.

The fact that the entire session—from moderation to resource presentations—was entrusted to women was widely seen as a significant sign of the synodal Church envisioned by Pope Francis, where the gifts and leadership of all the baptized are recognised and valued.

Delegates welcomed the strong and insightful contributions of the women leaders, noting that their perspectives enriched the assembly's deliberations on ecology, justice, and the Church's mission in the modern world.

As the CCBI National Synodal Assembly progresses, the session stood as a powerful testimony to the indispensable role of women in the life, mission, and leadership of the Church in India.
