CCBI Synodal Assembly Calls for Ecological Conversion and Inclusive Development

Bengaluru, May 2, 2026: The fourth thematic session of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) National Synodal Assembly focused on the urgent challenges of integral ecology and social inequality, calling the Church in India to respond with prophetic courage and concrete action.

Moderated by Olinda Timms, the session featured thought-provoking presentations by Jean D'Cunha and Arlene Manoharan, who examined the interconnected crises of environmental degradation, climate change, poverty, and inequality.

Addressing the assembly, Jean D'Cunha warned that ecological degradation and climate change are no longer distant possibilities but a stark reality confronting humanity today. Drawing inspiration from Pope Francis and his landmark encyclical Laudato si', she urged the Church to hear both "the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor."

She emphasized that the ecological crisis is fundamentally a moral and spiritual challenge, requiring not only awareness but also courageous environmental action. The Church, she said, must lead by example in promoting sustainable lifestyles, ecological justice, and care for creation.

Arlene Manoharan, in her presentation, highlighted the paradox of rapid economic growth existing alongside persistent poverty and widening inequality. She observed that deprivation extends far beyond income, encompassing access to education, healthcare, dignity, and opportunities for participation.

While economic indicators may suggest progress, she noted that the fruits of development remain unevenly distributed, leaving many communities on the margins. "The poor are becoming poorer," she cautioned, calling for development models that place human dignity, justice, and inclusion at their centre.

The session challenged delegates to recognize the intimate connection between ecological responsibility and social justice. Participants were urged to advocate for policies and practices that protect both the environment and vulnerable communities.

As the Synodal Assembly continues, the deliberations underscored the Church's commitment to fostering a more just, sustainable, and compassionate society, rooted in the Gospel and responsive to the pressing realities of contemporary India.
