Meghalaya, July 8, 2026: For one catechist in Meghalaya's Jowai Diocese, a prolonged illness threatened more than his health—it placed his family's only source of livelihood at risk. What happened next became a powerful witness to faith lived through community.
BECs Strengthening Community Life
For nearly a decade, the Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) of Ïongshiwiat Parish have nurtured strong bonds of prayer, fellowship and mutual care among the faithful. Spread across groups such as Mary Help of Christians, St. Therese, St. Peter, St. Paul, St. Augustine and St. Benedict, the communities have continued to strengthen village life through their shared commitment to Christian values.
A Catechist's Time of Need
Among those deeply involved in this mission was Catechist Ïoannis Suting, a longtime BEC member known for supporting the Catholic faithful in the village. Alongside his ministry, he depended on paddy cultivation to provide for his family. But in July 2024, a prolonged illness left him unable to work during the crucial monsoon season when paddy transplantation had to be completed on time.
As the days passed, the situation became increasingly difficult. Missing the transplantation season meant risking the family's main source of livelihood.
Faith in Action
What followed revealed the true spirit of the community.
On July 8, 2024, members from across the parish came together in solidarity. Under the leadership of Parish Priest Father Thawmonlang Sutnga of “U Khrist Jingshai” Parish, 44 volunteers from different BEC groups dedicated an entire day to transplanting seedlings in Ïoannis Suting's paddy fields.
Their collective effort ensured that the transplantation was completed on schedule, bringing relief and renewed hope to the family.
A Lasting Witness of Solidarity
The initiative became more than an act of labour. It strengthened the bond among the BEC members and deepened Ïoannis Suting's faith and love for the people he had long served. It also created a stronger sense of trust and unity within the community, inspiring everyone involved.
Filled with gratitude, Ïoannis Suting and his family remained thankful to the BEC members and to the Word of God that inspired them to act with compassion and solidarity. Even amid illness, he continued cheerfully in his divine calling.
In Ïongshiwiat Parish, the story remains a reminder that BECs are not only places of prayer, but communities where faith is lived through action, especially in moments when people need each other the most.
