Nagpur, July 8, 2026: The Archdiocese of Nagpur marked a landmark moment in its journey of faith and mission with the blessing of the newly renovated St. Francis de Sales (SFS) Cathedral and the inauguration of the RNR: Research and Resource Development Centre, signalling a renewed commitment to preserving the Church's heritage while embracing a culture of research, accountability and synodal renewal.
Nearly 500 clergy, religious and lay faithful gathered for the historic celebration, which began with the blessing of the cathedral's restored sanctuary. Renovated in white marble and returned to its original classical design, the sanctuary stands as a symbol of the archdiocese's reverence for its liturgical and spiritual traditions.
The solemn Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Cardinal Philip Neri Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa - Daman, in the presence of Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop Elias Gonsalves of Nagpur, more than 20 bishops of the Western Region Bishops' Council, over 100 priests, religious and members of the faithful.
Following the Mass, Cardinal Oswald Gracias inaugurated the RNR: Research and Resource Development Centre, a pioneering initiative envisioned to strengthen the institutional life of the archdiocese through research, strategic planning and evidence-based decision-making.
Presenting the vision of the centre, Archbishop Elias Gonsalves said the initiative is inspired by the Church's synodal call to accountability, transparency and co-responsibility. He explained that the centre will provide reliable data, research and resource development to support pastoral planning, educational excellence and institutional growth across the archdiocese.
The occasion also witnessed the release of the centre's first major publication, A Synodal Schoolyard: Co-responsibility and Transformation in Catholic Education, prepared in collaboration with a research institute in Pune. The study offers a comprehensive assessment of 47 educational institutions under the Archdiocesan Board of Education, evaluating their contribution in the light of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Plan 2030, the National Education Policy 2020 and the Vatican's vision of transformative, synodal education.
The publication was prepared by an editorial team led by Archbishop Elias Gonsalves, with Fr. Vivian Lobo, Fr. Jeyaprakash, Mr. Ashirwad Satyam and Mr. Arnold Peter.
Adding a festive dimension to the celebration, students of Jeevodaya Special School and staff of SFS School of Excellence presented a cultural programme. A documentary showcasing the transformation of Catholic schools in the archdiocese into contemporary, data-driven institutions was also screened.
The day's twin inaugurations reflected the Archdiocese of Nagpur's vision of integrating faith with innovation—honouring its rich ecclesial heritage while equipping its institutions to respond creatively and responsibly to the pastoral and educational challenges of the future.
