New York, October 21, 2025 — Addressing the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, Archbishop Paul R. Gallagher, the Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, called on the global community to renew its commitment to peace, justice, and truth.
Speaking on the theme “Better Together: Eighty Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” Archbishop Gallagher underscored the importance of multilateral cooperation as essential to addressing today’s global challenges. He emphasised that genuine peace must be rooted in mutual respect, a proper understanding of the human person, and justice—rejecting hatred and vengeance in favour of dialogue and reconciliation.
Drawing attention to the persecution of minorities, the Archbishop noted that more than 380 million Christians face discrimination or persecution worldwide. “Data show that Christians are the most persecuted group globally, yet the international community seems to be turning a blind eye to their plight,” he said.
He also urged diplomatic and peaceful solutions to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, the Middle East, Syria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan, stressing the moral duty of nations to prioritise human dignity and the needs of the most vulnerable. Reaffirming the Vatican’s consistent stance, Archbishop Gallagher appealed for global disarmament, the reduction of weapon stockpiles, and the elimination of nuclear arms.
