Tripura School Row Continues as Authorities Step in Over Saraswati Puja Dispute

Tripura, Jan 24, 2025: Tension was reported at Holy Cross Convent School, Sakhaibari in Dharmanagar, North Tripura, following a dispute over the conduct of Saraswati Puja within the school premises. The situation prompted administrative intervention and police deployment to maintain law and order.

According to sources from the institution, the issue began on January 16 when six individuals, reportedly affiliated with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), entered the school premises and sought information regarding the religious composition of students. The school administration declined to provide the details, stating that institutional data could be shared only through official written directives.

The following day, the group allegedly accused the institution of promoting religious conversion and cultural erosion. They further demanded permission to organise Saraswati Puja on campus, claiming that a majority of students belonged to the Hindu faith. The school management reiterated that Holy Cross Convent School is a Catholic minority institution which does not host religious celebrations of any faith within its campus, as it serves students from diverse religious backgrounds.

Sources said the visitors allegedly made derogatory remarks towards the principal and rejected attempts by staff members to de-escalate the situation. The group reportedly warned of returning with larger numbers if their demand was not accepted.

In view of the developments, the school informed the district authorities. An FIR was subsequently filed, primarily seeking police protection, especially considering the presence of tribal girl students residing in the hostel. However, the filing of the complaint reportedly led to further tension.

On January 20, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate convened a meeting involving both parties. The school principal was advised not to attend, and six staff representatives participated. The meeting reportedly ended without a resolution.

The situation escalated again on January 22 when members of the group allegedly arrived at the school accompanied by media personnel. Discussions were held with the institution’s religious superiors. Subsequently, reports circulated claiming that the school had granted permission for religious activities, a claim the management has denied.

Sources further alleged that signatures of more than 70 parents were collected under pressure outside the school gate. Later that day, information was received regarding plans to erect a religious pandal within the campus, prompting the school to alert the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police.

Police personnel were deployed, and entry of materials intended for the proposed setup was prevented. CCTV footage reportedly showed a large gathering outside the school premises, following which round-the-clock security was arranged under the directions of the district administration.

Police patrolling continued the next day, and authorities confirmed that the situation is currently peaceful and under control.
