Bhubaneswar, February 8, 2026: The National Institute of Social Work and Social Sciences marked its 55th Foundation Day at its Bhubaneswar campus on February 7, reaffirming its commitment to justice, inclusion and care for creation.
The celebration, also observed as the institute’s Annual Day, featured lectures and discussions on social justice, environmental concerns and the rights of marginalised communities, reflecting the institute’s mission of social transformation rooted in dignity and equity.
Delivering the keynote address, Bipin Jojo, Professor and Dean at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, underscored the urgency of environmental justice in India. He stressed the need to place indigenous knowledge systems at the centre of development, describing them as sustainable and holistic approaches to living in harmony with nature. He also warned of the growing threats faced by indigenous communities amid rapid modernisation and called for culturally grounded, community-based responses.
A highlight of the event was the presentation of the Distinguished Alumni Awards 2026, recognising individuals and organisations whose work reflects the values of the institute. Seven awardees were honoured for their contributions in various fields of social engagement.
The awards were conferred by Jagneshwar Dandpat, Vice-Chancellor of Utkal University, with citations read by Sashmi Nayak, Director General of the institute.
Among the awardees was Sister Sujata Jena (Batch of 2004), recognised for her advocacy for the poor and excluded. The citation noted her work at the intersection of law, journalism and social activism, and her sustained efforts to promote human rights and empower marginalised communities.
Other recipients included Simanchal Ranjit for legal advocacy; Sandeep Pattnaik for public policy advocacy; Mohammad Imran Ali for campaigns against substance abuse; Nishikant Tarenia for work with the elderly; the Odisha Professional Social Workers Association for promoting social work education and practice; and Dr. K. Anuradha for supporting indigenous livelihoods.
The institute also honoured academic excellence by presenting cash awards to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students who secured the highest marks.
Founded in 1971, the National Institute of Social Work and Social Sciences is eastern India’s first postgraduate institution for Social Work and Social Communication and continues to play a key role in social work education and practice.
