University of Madras Launches Certificate Course on Vatican II Studies

Chennai, July 26, 2026 — The Department of Christian Studies at the University of Madras has launched the first batch of its Certificate Course in Council Vatican II Studies, opening a new academic platform for the systematic study of the Second Vatican Council and its continuing relevance to the Church and society.

The initiative was launched in response to the vision of Dr. George Antonysamy, Archbishop of Madras-Mylapore, who encouraged systematic formation in the teachings and vision of the Second Vatican Council. The programme is being implemented under the leadership of Dr. James Ponniah, Head of the Department of Christian Studies.

The inaugural batch includes lay participants from diverse professional and academic backgrounds who have enrolled to deepen their understanding of the Council's documents, theology and pastoral vision.

The course is coordinated by Fr. Arul Jesu Dass, who welcomed the participants and explained the objectives of the programme. Fr. Ritchie Vincent, faculty member of the Department of Christian Studies, is among the resource persons teaching the course.

The curriculum provides a systematic study of the four principal constitutions of Vatican II—Lumen Gentium, Dei Verbum, Sacrosanctum Concilium and Gaudium et Spes—as well as the Council's decrees and declarations.

The programme seeks to equip participants with a deeper understanding of the theological foundations, pastoral renewal, liturgical reforms and missionary vision of Vatican II, while encouraging them to reflect on their relevance to contemporary society and the life of the Church.

Organisers said the course aims to promote greater awareness of the Council's enduring significance and foster informed Christian leadership rooted in the vision of Vatican II.

The launch marks a significant milestone for the Department of Christian Studies and reflects the University of Madras' efforts to make theological education accessible to a wider audience, including clergy, religious and lay faithful seeking a deeper understanding of the Church's teachings and mission.

The inaugural session was held on July 25 at the Department of Christian Studies, with participants expressing enthusiasm about beginning an academic journey into one of the most consequential events in the modern history of the Catholic Church.
