September 11, 2026: The Catholic Church commemorates Saint Paphnutius of Thebes, an Egyptian bishop and courageous confessor of the faith who suffered greatly during the persecutions of the early Church. He later became known for his role at the First Council of Nicaea in 325, where he defended the Catholic faith.

Saint Paphnutius lived during the early fourth century, a period when Christians in Egypt faced severe persecution. He became a bishop in the Upper Thebaid and was respected for his holiness, courage and commitment to the Christian faith.

According to tradition, Paphnutius had also lived an ascetic life and was associated with the spiritual tradition of Saint Anthony the Great, one of the great fathers of Egyptian monasticism.
During the persecution under Emperor Maximinus, Paphnutius was arrested because of his Christian faith. He suffered terrible physical punishment, including the loss of an eye and severe mutilation of his leg. He was eventually condemned to forced labour in the mines.
Despite these sufferings, Paphnutius remained faithful to Christ. His wounds became a visible testimony to his courage and perseverance.
When persecution ended, he returned to his ministry as a bishop. His reputation for holiness and courage earned him great respect among Christians.
In 325, Paphnutius took part in the First Council of Nicaea, one of the most important councils in Christian history. The council defended the divinity of Jesus Christ against Arianism and helped formulate the faith expressed in the Nicene Creed.
Paphnutius's presence at the council was especially significant because he had personally suffered for the faith he was defending.
Paphnutius continued his episcopal ministry after Nicaea and remained involved in the Church's defence of orthodox Christianity. He is also traditionally associated with the later Synod of Tyre in 335.
His life represents the courage of the early Egyptian Church, where bishops and ordinary Christians often endured persecution for their belief in Christ.
Saint Paphnutius teaches Christians the importance of faithfulness, courage and perseverance. He endured persecution and physical suffering without abandoning Christ, and later used his voice to defend the faith of the Church.
His feast day is an invitation to pray for Christians who face persecution today, to remain steadfast during difficult times and to remember the sacrifices made by the early Christians who preserved the faith for future generations.
