Raipur, April 23, 2026: In a renewed pastoral response to the growing vulnerabilities of migrant communities, the Archdiocese of Raipur convened a diocesan-level seminar on safe migration, bringing together clergy, religious, and lay leaders for dialogue and action.
Organised by the archdiocesan Commission for Migrants, the seminar on the “Importance of Safe Migration” was held on April 22 at the SMMI Provincialate in Raipur. A total of 47 participants, including social workers and academicians, took part in the deliberations, reflecting a shared concern for the welfare and dignity of migrants.
The inaugural session underscored the Church’s commitment to compassion, justice, and accompaniment of those on the margins. Delivering the keynote address, Bishop Victor Henry Thakur of Raipur, who also serves as Chairman of the Commission for Migrants of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), highlighted evolving migration trends and the complex socio-economic and psychological challenges faced by migrant families.
Fr. Rashmikant Nayak, Regional Secretary of the Commission for Migrants, outlined pressing issues such as unsafe migration practices, lack of proper documentation, exploitation in workplaces, disruption in children’s education, and the disconnect between source and destination regions.
The seminar featured expert presentations, panel discussions, and interactive sessions, fostering active engagement among participants. Resource persons offered insights into existing legal frameworks, government welfare schemes, and grassroots initiatives designed to strengthen migrant support systems. Discussions also emphasised the collaborative role of the Church and civil society in safeguarding human rights and promoting inclusive communities.
A key outcome of the seminar was the identification of practical strategies to address migration challenges. These included awareness campaigns, skill development initiatives, and the strengthening of community-based support networks. Particular importance was given to psycho-social care and pastoral accompaniment as integral to migrant ministry. Participants also called for enhanced coordination among diocesan bodies, non-governmental organisations, and government agencies.
Among those present were Fr. John Xavier, Dean of Raipur; Fr. Lijo, Dean of Bhilai; Fr. Shanti Prakash Panna, President of the Conference of Religious India (CRI) Raipur; Sr. Dipeeka George, Provincial Superior of SMMI Raipur; and Sr. Mary Francis, Women’s Coordinator, Raipur.
The seminar concluded with a strong collective resolve to uphold the dignity of migrants and to intensify efforts toward ensuring safe and humane migration, reaffirming the Church’s mission of solidarity with the most vulnerable.
