Pope Leo XIV Urges End to Violence in Sudan, Ukraine and Russia, Calls for Diplomacy

Vatican City, August 9, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has appealed for an end to the escalating violence in Sudan, Ukraine and Russia, urging world leaders to prioritise diplomacy, humanitarian assistance and respect for international humanitarian law.

Speaking after the Angelus on Sunday, the Pope expressed particular concern for the people of el-Obeid in Sudan, where months of conflict have left civilians facing severe shortages of food, water and medical supplies.

The Holy Father renewed his appeal to those in authority to establish humanitarian corridors to allow aid to reach civilians and called on the international community to support efforts towards an immediate ceasefire.

“I pray that the Lord will sustain all those who are suffering, convert the hearts of those who sow violence, and grant the long-awaited peace,” the Pope said.

According to the United Nations, el-Obeid is at risk of becoming Sudan’s next major humanitarian catastrophe as continued fighting, drone attacks and growing insecurity worsen conditions for civilians. More than 14 million people have been displaced across Sudan during three years of conflict, with millions facing hunger.

Turning to the war in Ukraine and Russia, Pope Leo lamented the increasing number of civilian casualties and condemned the continuing attacks affecting innocent people.

“I stand with the families of the victims, the wounded, and all those who are suffering as a result of the ongoing conflict,” he said.

The Pope renewed his appeal for all parties to respect international humanitarian law and refrain from targeting civilians.

“War only breeds more war and causes immense suffering. It is time to stop the spiral of violence and make room for diplomacy and dialogue, paving the way for peace,” he said.

Addressing young people gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Pope Leo encouraged them to spend their holidays in activities that promote personal growth, friendship and hope. Recalling his recent meeting with young people in Assisi, he urged them to draw inspiration from the saints commemorated during these days, including St. Dominic, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, St. Lawrence and St. Clare of Assisi.

“Dear young people, let yourselves be inspired and enthused by these exemplary witnesses to the Gospel,” the Pope said.
