Pope Leo XIV Remembers Beirut Port Explosion Victims

Beirut, 3 December 2025 — On his final day in Lebanon, Pope Leo XIV visited the port of Beirut and prayed for those who died in the 2020 explosion, offering prayers and flower tributes to honour their memory amid a call for compassion, justice and national healing.

During the visit, the Pope expressed solidarity with survivors, families of victims and the people of Lebanon, condemning neglect and calling for accountability while urging the nation to move forward with unity and hope.

He described the port catastrophe as a painful wound in the country’s history and invited Lebanese citizens and leaders alike to transform grief into concrete acts of solidarity, safety reforms and social justice that protect human dignity.

The gesture is seen not only as an act of pastoral care but also as a call for persistent commitment to rebuilding the social fabric of Beirut, ensuring that such tragedies are neither forgotten nor repeated.
