Pope Leo XIV Calls Christians to Unite for 2033 Redemption Anniversary

Vatican City, July 1, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has called on Christians across the world to come together in preparation for the 2033 celebration marking 2,000 years since the Redemption of Christ. Addressing representatives of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople at the Vatican, the Pope urged different Christian traditions to rediscover their shared faith and become stronger witnesses of hope, peace and unity.

A call for unity at a time of division

The meeting took place during the traditional exchange of visits between the Catholic Church and the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which takes place around the feast days of their respective patron saints — Saints Peter and Paul for Rome and Saint Andrew for Constantinople.

Pope Leo XIV described the visit as a sign of the “fraternal closeness” between the two Churches and expressed gratitude for the continued efforts towards deeper Christian cooperation.

Looking towards the 2033 milestone

The Pope highlighted the importance of the upcoming anniversary of Christ’s Redemption, saying that the journey towards 2033 should be undertaken together by Christians worldwide.

He encouraged believers from different denominations to see the anniversary not only as a historical celebration but also as an opportunity to renew their commitment to sharing the message of the risen Christ.

The year 2033 will mark two thousand years since Christians believe Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection brought salvation to humanity. Pope Leo said the occasion should inspire Christians to overcome divisions and focus on their common mission.

He expressed hope that the celebration would become a moment when Christians “rediscover the gift and the call to be witnesses to the Risen One”.

Learning from the Council of Nicaea

Pope Leo XIV also reflected on the significance of the 1,700th anniversary of the First Council of Nicaea, which was commemorated recently.

The historic council, held in 325 AD, played a major role in shaping Christian doctrine and produced the foundation of the Nicene Creed, which remains a central statement of faith for many Christian communities today.

According to the Pope, the anniversary demonstrated the existing bonds of communion among Christians who share belief in God the Father, Jesus Christ as Lord and Son of God, and the Holy Spirit.

He said the Nicene Creed continues to serve as a guiding principle for the ecumenical journey, showing that unity can exist while respecting legitimate differences among Christian traditions.

Christians called to become signs of peace

During his address, Pope Leo XIV spoke about the challenges facing the modern world, including wars, political tensions, social divisions and increasing polarisation.

He said Christians united in faith have a responsibility to become credible signs of peace and contribute to efforts aimed at building a more peaceful world.

The Pope warned that the credibility of the Christian message itself is at stake if believers fail to work together in addressing global challenges.

He pointed to areas requiring greater cooperation, including the pursuit of peace, the responsible use of new technologies and protecting the environment.

According to Pope Leo, the call for Christian collaboration comes directly from the teachings of Jesus Christ and the responsibility believers have towards humanity.

Protecting human dignity and life

The Pope also emphasised the importance of protecting the dignity of every person, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.

He said respect for human life, beginning with the youngest and those most in need, must remain a central measure of Christian responsibility.

In his closing remarks, Pope Leo XIV thanked the delegation from Constantinople for their commitment to strengthening Christian unity. He also offered prayers for continued cooperation between the Catholic Church and other Christian communities.

A shared path towards hope

As the world faces conflicts, uncertainty and growing divisions, Pope Leo XIV’s message highlights the importance of unity among Christians as a source of hope.

The 2033 anniversary of Christ’s Redemption could become a historic moment for Christians worldwide to move beyond differences and focus on their shared mission of faith, peace and service.

Through cooperation and mutual understanding, the Pope expressed hope that Christians can offer a stronger message of reconciliation to a world searching for healing and unity.
