Vatican, April 10, 2026: The Director of the Holy See Press Office has presented Pope Leo’s forthcoming Apostolic Journey to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea—an itinerary distinguished by the richness and diversity of histories, cultures and traditions.
The Director of the Holy See Press Office, Matteo Bruni, detailed the Apostolic Journey that Pope Leo XIV is set to undertake from 13 to 23 April across Algeria, Cameroon, Angola and Equatorial Guinea.
Addressing journalists at a press conference on Thursday, he described the visit, which will cover four countries over eleven days and feature speeches in English, French, Portuguese and Spanish. Key themes to be addressed include peace, migration, the environment, young people and the family. Bruni also noted that no special security measures are foreseen.
This journey will be the Pope’s longest to date and his first visit to Algeria, as well as the first papal visit in several decades to the other three nations. The itinerary includes regions characterised by cultural and linguistic diversity, alongside social and political challenges such as conflict, migration and interreligious coexistence.
In Algeria, the visit will naturally include references to the legacy of Saint Augustine and the Christian presence in North Africa, together with engagement in dialogue with the Muslim world and the issue of migration.
In Cameroon, described as “Africa in miniature” due to the diversity and richness of its land, traditions and languages, the Pope is expected to speak on themes of peace, coexistence, youth and integral human development.
In Angola, the focus will encompass the role of young people, the country’s natural and human resources, and the effects of corruption and colonial history.
In Equatorial Guinea, emphasis will be placed on culture and education, as well as the Church’s role in fostering peace in a resource-rich region.
The papal delegation will include representatives from various Dicasteries, along with several Cardinals from Africa. As is customary, the Pope is expected to hold an in-flight press conference during his return journey to Rome at the conclusion of the visit.
