Vatican, 26 Jan, 2026: Pope Leo XIV has underscored that the very identity of the Church is to live as a community in mission, “at the service of fraternity among all human beings and harmony with all creation,” in his message for the 100th World Mission Day.
Reflecting on a world marked by growing conflicts and divisions, the Pope noted that proclaiming the Gospel today demands hearts oriented toward peace and spirits shaped by reconciliation, capable of fostering unity.
The message was released ahead of the 100th World Mission Day, instituted by Pope Pius XI a century ago. This year’s observance will be marked on October 18 under the theme *“One in Christ, united in mission.”*
Mission rooted in union with Christ
At the core of missionary life, Pope Leo XIV wrote, lies the “mystery of union with Christ.” Christianity, he explained, is not merely a collection of practices but a lived experience of communion.
The Church, he stated, is by its very nature “a communion that flows from the Trinity, and continues to be sustained by the Trinity. A communion at the service of fraternity among all human beings and harmony with all creation.”
He further emphasised that the Church’s primary missionary responsibility is the renewal of spiritual and fraternal unity among its members, expressing hope for deeper ecumenical engagement among Christian Churches.
Mission as the task of every baptised person
The Pope clarified that unity within the Church is not an end in itself but is always directed toward mission. It is within communion, he observed, that the proclamation of the Gospel “acquires its full communicative power.”
“No baptized person,” Pope Leo XIV wrote, “is exempt from or indifferent to mission: everyone, each according to their own vocation and condition of life, participates in the great work that Christ has entrusted to his Church. As Pope Francis repeatedly reminded us, proclaiming the Gospel is an action that is always harmonious, communal and synodal.”
Love at the heart of evangelisation
Highlighting love as the foundation of missionary work, the Pope stated, “If unity is the condition of mission, love is its essence.”
The message of evangelisation, he said, is not a theoretical concept but “the Gospel of God’s faithful love, incarnated in the face and life of Jesus Christ.”
Recalling the witness of martyrs, confessors, and missionaries throughout history, Pope Leo XIV noted that countless Christians have given their lives to reveal this divine love to the world.
“The world still needs these courageous witnesses of Christ,” he wrote, “and the ecclesial communities still need new missionary vocations, for which we must always pray to the Father. May He grant us the gift of young and adult people willing to leave everything to follow Christ in the path of evangelization to the ends of the earth!”
The Pope’s prayer
Concluding his message, Pope Leo XIV offered a prayer for unity and missionary zeal within the Church:
“Holy Father, make us one in Christ, rooted in his love that unites and renews. May all members of the Church be united in mission, docile to the Holy Spirit, courageous in bearing witness to the Gospel, proclaiming and daily embodying your faithful love for all creatures. Bless all missionary men and women, support them in their efforts, and watch over them in hope! Mary, Queen of Missions, accompany our work of evangelization in every corner of the earth: make us instruments of peace, and grant that the whole world may recognize in Christ the light that saves. Amen.”
