Pope: Digital Communication must serve Truth and Human Dignity

Vatican City, August 5, 2025: Pope Leo has urged Catholic communicators to foster digital tools and communication strategies that are inspired by the pursuit of truth and respect for human dignity.

The appeal was made in a message to participants attending the SIGNIS World Conference, currently being held in Kigali, Rwanda. The message was signed on his behalf by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.

The Pope extended his cordial greetings to those gathered and assured them of his spiritual closeness. He also expressed the hope that their deliberations would provide “new impetus” to efforts aimed at ensuring that communication platforms promote the common good of the entire human family.

Shaping culture and conscience

The message reflects on the realities of the digital age, observing that digital technology and the internet now shape much of contemporary life.

Referring to his Encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo recalled that online communication is more than a way of transmitting information. It also creates culture, shaping how people perceive the world and profoundly influencing the collective conscience.

In this context, the Holy Father encouraged participants to consider practical ways of advancing the conference theme, “Digital Communication for Cultural Harmony and Environmental Wellbeing.”

He expressed the hope that their discussions would result in communication strategies and tools guided by truth and rooted in respect for the dignity of every person.

Communion, peace and care for creation

The message went on to say that such an approach can contribute to building a culture that reflects the Gospel values of communion and peace, while also promoting responsible stewardship of the environment.

Pope Leo entrusted all those taking part in the conference to the intercession of Mary, Mother of the Church, and assured them of his prayers that their work would bear lasting fruit.

He concluded by imparting his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of “wisdom and strength in the Lord.”
