Over Half a Million Pilgrims Cross the Door of St Peter’s Basilica Since The Start of Jubilee Year

Vatican, January 7, 2025: More than half a million pilgrims have already crossed the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica in Rome since the Jubilee Year of Hope began two weeks ago. According to a press statement released by the Vatican on Tuesday, 545,532 faithful from different parts of the world have made their pilgrimage to Rome so far.

The Holy See, in collaboration with Italian authorities and the Rome Prefecture, is ensuring a safe and smooth experience for pilgrims flocking to the Eternal City to celebrate the Jubilee.

Archbishop Rino Fisichella, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelisation and organizer of the Jubilee, highlighted the symbolic significance of this milestone, calling it “a very significant start.” Pilgrims in groups, led by the Jubilee Cross, have been proceeding along Via della Conciliazione to the basilica, demonstrating their faith and commitment.

The Vatican press statement on Tuesday emphasized the cooperation between the Holy See and local authorities to ensure the safety and efficient organization of the large influx of visitors. Archbishop Fisichella acknowledged initial challenges in managing the flow of pilgrims but assured that the Dicastery remains dedicated to enhancing the experience for everyone. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that pilgrims receive a warm welcome and an experience that meets their expectations”, he stated.

With the Holy Door at St Paul Outside the Walls opened on January 5, pilgrims now have the opportunity to complete their spiritual journey by visiting all four papal basilicas: St Peter’s Basilica, Basilica of St. John Lateran, Basilica of St. Mary Major, and Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.

Given the high demand, pilgrims are encouraged to book their visit in advance through the official Jubilee website, iubilaeum2025.va.

As the Jubilee Year progresses, the first major event for the year - the Jubilee for Communication - is set to take place from January 24 to 26. Thousands of media professionals from across the globe are expected to gather in Rome for the event, as the Vatican and Rome continue to prepare to greet millions more throughout the Jubilee.
