“Fr. Felix Wilfred, a Beacon of Intellectual and Spiritual Wisdom:” Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão

Bangalore, January 8, 2025 (CCBI): His Eminence Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão, President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Prof. Dr. Felix Wilfred, a renowned priest and theologian. Cardinal Ferrão described him as "a beacon of intellectual and spiritual wisdom" and acknowledged his immense contribution to the global theological community.


In his message of condolence, Cardinal Ferrão said, “Prof. Wilfred’s life was a testament to his extraordinary dedication to theological scholarship, interreligious dialogue and the promotion of justice and harmony. His profound insights, scholarly rigour and compassionate pastoral approach have inspired theologians, clergy and laypersons worldwide.”


Highlighting Prof. Wilfred’s far-reaching influence, Cardinal Ferrão remarked, “As a globally celebrated scholar, Prof. Wilfred’s contributions transcended boundaries, enriching the Church’s mission across Asia and beyond. His leadership roles in the Vatican International Theological Commission, Indian Theological Association and the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences exemplified his unwavering commitment to theological excellence and meaningful dialogue.”


The Cardinal emphasized Prof. Wilfred’s lasting legacy, stating, “The Church in India owes a profound debt of gratitude to Prof. Wilfred for his groundbreaking work in bridging cultural and religious divides and advancing liberation theology in the Asian context. His dedication to academic excellence, his mentorship of students and his prolific writings leave an enduring legacy that will inspire future generations.”


On behalf of the CCBI, Cardinal Ferrão extended his deepest sympathies to the Bishop and the Church in Kuzhiturai, to Prof. Wilfred’s family, friends and the many individuals touched by his wisdom and guidance. “May the Lord grant him eternal rest and may his life’s work continue to illuminate the path of the Church’s mission,” he concluded.
