Organisations Seek Independent Probe into Deaths of Three Farmers in Hanur Firing

HANUR, August 24, 2026: The Organisation for Development and Peace (ODP), Mysuru, along with the Mahilodaya Mahila Okkoota and the Federation of Village Development Self-Help Groups and Farmers, has urged the Karnataka Government to order an impartial and independent investigation into the deaths of three farmers in a firing incident in the Chikkallur Reserve Forest area of Hanur taluk in Chamarajanagar district.

Antony Swamy, John Rose Peter and Kumar reportedly died in firing involving Forest Department personnel on August 15.

In a representation to the state government, the organisations said they recognised the need to protect reserve forests and curb illegal activities but questioned whether the use of lethal force was warranted in the circumstances.

They called for a transparent investigation to establish the sequence of events and determine responsibility for the deaths. The organisations also demanded that those found responsible for any wrongdoing be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The groups stressed that the inquiry should be conducted independently and without political pressure or interference. They said protecting the lives and dignity of citizens was a fundamental responsibility of the government and called for prompt measures to provide justice to the bereaved families.

The organisations have also sought adequate compensation for the families of the three deceased persons and government employment for one member of each family. They urged the government to assume responsibility for the education of the deceased persons' children until they complete their studies.

The representation further sought legal assistance and protection for the affected families and called for measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Highlighting the economic difficulties faced by communities in the Hanur-Shagya region, the organisations said many families depend on small agricultural holdings and livestock for their livelihoods. They pointed to inadequate rainfall in the area and urged the government to strengthen agricultural support and improve drinking water facilities for both residents and livestock.

“Justice must be ensured for the innocent farmers who lost their lives, and those found responsible must be brought to justice,” the organisations said.
