Nuns Detained Amid Conversion Allegations at Durg Railway Station in Chhattisgarh

Durg, Chhattisgarh, July 25, 2025: A dramatic scene unfolded at Durg Railway Station as members of the Bajrang Dal gathered in large numbers, creating unrest and levelling serious allegations against two Catholic nuns and a young man accompanying three girls. The right-wing group accused the nuns of attempting religious conversion and human trafficking – charges that are yet to be substantiated. As this story is being published, the two Catholic nuns and the boy are still in custody.

According to eyewitnesses, Bajrang Dal members did not seek any verification of facts before making public accusations. They alleged that the girls were being taken away for conversion and even claimed an attempt at trafficking, sparking outrage. Despite the presence of law enforcement, the group passed swift judgement, declaring the Christian missionaries guilty without due process.

The Bajrang Dal members declared that unless immediate action is taken by the Chief Minister or the ruling government in Chhattisgarh, they would stage protests and strikes across the state. The gathering at the railway station remained tense, with the mob identifying themselves openly as Bajrang Dal activists.

The incident occurred earlier this morning. The three girls in question had reportedly travelled to Durg with the consent of their parents to work at a hospital managed by Catholic sisters. However, they were stopped at the station by the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) for not possessing platform tickets. During questioning, the girls stated that they were going to work with the nuns.

The TTE then informed local members of Bajrang Dal, who arrived at the scene and began accusing the nuns of attempting to convert the girls. The three young women are currently under the care of the Women Welfare Committee in Durg.

The parents of the girls had previously provided written consent along with copies of their Aadhaar cards, clearly stating their approval for their daughters to take up employment with the sisters. Despite this, their clarification was ignored, and the matter escalated due to political pressure and misinformation.

Speaking to Catholic Connect, Priest working in Chattisgarh mentioned that the police contacted the girls' parents, who confirmed that their daughters had voluntarily travelled to work and had also done so in the past. The girls are aged between 19 and 22. However, even after the parental confirmation, authorities did not permit the girls to leave, allegedly due to ongoing political influence.

The village head and the girls’ parents are expected to travel to Durg tomorrow to seek their release and resolve the matter. Community leaders and Church representatives have condemned the incident, highlighting it as yet another instance of targeting minority communities under false pretences.

The situation remains under close watch as concerned parties await a fair and just resolution.

Meanwhile, a priest in a North Indian diocese has asked the Conference of Religious India (CRI) and diocesan bishops to establish clear guidelines for nuns travelling with candidates and staff, suggesting that parents escort boys and girls to formation or work sites to avo

id potential issues.
