Missing Elderly Nun Found Safe in Tamil Nadu, Reunites with Community

June 2, 2026: Relief and joy have swept through the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate, Hyderabad Province, after Sister Amala, a 68-year-old nun who had been reported missing, was found safe and reunited with her religious community.


Sister Amala had travelled to her hometown in Poonthope, Tamil Nadu during the holidays to spend time with her elder sister. She was expected to return on May 30 but was later reported missing, prompting widespread concern and search efforts.


According to a statement issued by Sr. Kaspar Mary MSI, the Province leader of Hyderabad, Sister Amala was found near Tamil University, Thanjavur.

Sr. Kaspar Mary, accompanied by several sisters, brought Sister Amala from Tanjavur to Nirmala Convent, Karungal, where she arrived safely.


In her statement, Sr. Kaspar Mary expressed gratitude to all those who assisted in the search efforts, including Church authorities, civil authorities, religious communities, members of the media, the laity, and the faithful whose prayers and support contributed to Sister Amala's safe return.


“She is happy to join the community and overall health conditions seem quite stable,” the Provincial Leader stated.


Sr. Kaspar Mary also thanked all those who stood by the congregation during the search and described the development as a moment accepted in the spirit of God's will, echoing the words of the congregation's foundress.
