VATICAN CITY, 16 April 2025 — Pope Francis has authorised the promulgation of a miracle attributed to the Venerable Servant of God Eliswa of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Eliswa Vakayil), founder of the Congregation of the Third Order of Discalced Carmelite Nuns. The decision was announced on Monday, 14 April, following the Holy Father’s audience with Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, Prefect of the Dicastery for the Causes of Saints.
A Miracle in the Womb
The approved miracle took place in 2005 in Ernakulam, Kerala. During the 34th week of pregnancy, a baby girl was diagnosed with a cleft lip. Through the intercession of Mother Eliswa, the child was miraculously healed in the womb — an event that baffled medical experts. The Vatican's recognition of this unexplained healing brings Mother Eliswa significantly closer to beatification.
A Life of Prayer and Service
Born on 15 October 1831 in Ochanthuruth, Kerala, Eliswa Vakayil lived a life rooted in deep faith and service. At 16, she married a wealthy businessman and had a daughter in 1851. Widowed the following year, she embraced a life of prayer, simplicity, and care for the poor.
Over a decade later, while praying before the Blessed Sacrament, she felt called to consecrate her life to God. Inspired by her commitment, her daughter Anna and sister joined her, and all three were received into the Carmelite order four years later.
Foundress of India’s First Indigenous Carmelite Congregation
In 1862, Eliswa met Fr. Leopoldo Beccaro, an Italian Discalced Carmelite priest, who became her spiritual guide. Under his direction, she founded the Third Order of Discalced Carmelites — the first indigenous Carmelite congregation in Kerala. The community embraced a contemplative lifestyle focused on spiritual growth, sisterhood, and humble service.
Declared Venerable in 2023
On 8 November 2023, the Vatican officially declared Eliswa Vakayil as Venerable, recognising the heroic virtues she demonstrated throughout her life. This significant recognition was a major step in her cause for canonisation, drawing renewed attention to her legacy both in India and beyond.
A Step Closer to Sainthood
Mother Eliswa passed away on 18 July 1913 in Varapuzha, Kerala. The Vatican’s recognition of the miracle attributed to her intercession is a historic milestone, bringing her one step closer to beatification. It is a moment of joy and gratitude for the Indian Church and the global Carmelite family, who continue to draw strength and inspiration from her holy and courageous life.
