Sri Lanka, August 28, 2025: The International Movement of Catholic Agricultural and Rural Youth (MIJARC World) marked its 70th Anniversary and 20th General Assembly on August 28 in Sri Lanka under the theme “Rural Youth and Agriculture.” Delegates and representatives from Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean gathered to reflect, celebrate, and chart new pathways for agricultural and rural youth.

CATECHETICAL DIPLOMA COURSE!
THE SOUL OF THE LITURGY: MUSIC IN THE SERVICE OF THE SACRED

The Solemn Holy Mass was presided over by Bishop Vijay Rayarala, PIME, of Srikakulam, along with Rev. Fr. Sleevaraj, Telugu Regional Youth Director, and Fr. Pradeep, National Director of the Catechetical Centre.

The inaugural programme featured a traditional Sri Lankan dance performance and the hoisting of MIJARC’s flag, symbolising global unity. The flag was raised by Bishop Vijay Rayarala, Ms. Ferosita Basumatary (President, MIJARC World), Mr. João de Deus Sousa (Vice President), and Mr. Krishnakar (Advisor).

Drawing inspiration from the Gospel, the message delivered during the inauguration emphasised new initiatives for agricultural and rural youth, highlighting the spirit of selfless giving: “When we give, God blesses us.” This was linked to the dedication of MIJARC representatives working for the growth of rural communities.

Rural Youth and Agriculture

The Assembly reaffirmed the central role of rural youth in shaping the future of agriculture and sustainability. Participants underlined the need to provide skills, resources, and leadership opportunities to ensure food security and strengthen rural development.

Discussions highlighted the importance of innovation in farming practices, encouraging young people to integrate modern technology with traditional wisdom to create resilient agricultural systems. It was further stressed that investing in rural youth goes beyond agriculture, contributing to the building of self-reliant, eco-conscious, and solidarity-based communities.

Global Perspectives, Shared Vision

The interactive session, moderated by Ms. Viola from Karnataka, India, was led with a prayer by Fr. Sleevaraj and a message from Advisor Mr. Krishnakar. Representatives from three continents shared insights into MIJARC’s activities in their regions, outlining the distinct challenges faced by rural youth while reaffirming a shared commitment to strengthening agricultural communities. The exchange showcased the diversity of experiences and the unity of purpose that defines MIJARC’s mission.

In his concluding remarks, Bishop Vijay Rayarala emphasised that empowering rural and agricultural youth is not only essential for the future of farming but also a crucial step towards integral human development.

Ecology at the Heart of Mission

The Ecology Session was led by Bishop Vijay Rayarala and inspired by Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’. Two central reflections were presented:

1. “The cry of the earth and the cry of the poor are one,” highlighted the deep connection between environmental destruction and the struggles faced by rural communities.

2. The call for an “ecological conversion,” urging rural youth to embrace lifestyles and initiatives that safeguard creation and promote sustainability.

Bishop Rayarala emphasised the urgency of ecological responsibility, encouraging young people to take the lead in environmental stewardship. The session concluded with prayers of thanksgiving.

Cultural and Global Significance

The anniversary and assembly combined cultural expression and global participation, blending Sri Lankan tradition with the voices of youth across four continents. The event reflected MIJARC’s mission of fostering unity, dialogue, and action among rural youth.

The 70th Anniversary and 20th General Assembly of MIJARC World was a milestone, reaffirming its commitment to empowering rural and agricultural youth while responding to the urgent call for ecological care and sustainable development in line with Laudato Si’.
