Mar Raphael Thattil Calls Asia to a New Journey of Reconciliation

Penang, Malaysia 28 November 2025: Mar Raphael Thattil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, called the Church in Asia to step onto a fresh path of reconciliation. Addressing delegates at the Great Pilgrimage of Hope in Penang, Malaysia, on 28 November 2025, he said the Church must witness to its faith amid Asia’s many religions and cultures, and must do so with a reconciled and reconciling heart.

He urged Christians to recognise Christ in every person, especially the poor and the vulnerable. This, he said, remains the heart of the Church’s mission in Asia. A certain restlessness in the mission, he added, is not a weakness but a sign of life and zeal. He encouraged the faithful to face today’s challenges with courage and creativity.

He highlighted the essential role of lay people, who bring the Gospel into workplaces, neighbourhoods and public life. Through their daily witness, he noted, they become missionaries by their very baptism.

Asia’s deep spiritual heritage, he said, offers fertile ground for a renewed encounter with Christ. When cultures rediscover this meeting, they can bear rich fruit for the Gospel.

Sixteen delegates from the Syro-Malabar Church are attending the Great Pilgrimage of Hope. Among them are Archbishop Andrews Thazhath of Trichur, Bishop George Rajendran of Thuckalay, Bishop Joseph Kollamparambil of Jagdalpur, Bishop John Nellikunnel of Idukki, Fr. Francis Elavathingal and Fr. Geroge Aluka.
