Madurai Parish Youth Turn Lenten Observance into Catalyst for Social Transformation

Madurai, March 19, 2026 — In a compelling expression of faith in action, the youth of St. Sebastian’s Church in Ellis Nagar, Madurai, have reimagined the Lenten season as a dynamic movement for social awareness and community engagement. Moving beyond traditional observances, the parish’s Youth Movement spearheaded a series of initiatives under the theme, “Toward the Dawn on the Path of Liberation,” blending spiritual reflection with pressing social concerns.

Guided by parish priest Fr. Joachin, the programme unfolded through a range of thematic activities designed to foster dialogue and inspire responsible living among parishioners. The campaign commenced with a focus on health and nutrition, as young participants creatively communicated the message, “Our food should be our medicine, not our poison.” Through presentations and outreach, they raised awareness about the risks associated with chemically processed foods while encouraging a return to traditional and organic dietary practices.

Subsequent sessions addressed the critical areas of education and employment. Emphasising the role of families in shaping the future of young people, the initiative encouraged parents to cultivate broader aspirations for their children, particularly in higher education and public service. The discussions sought to strengthen long-term vision and support within households.

A poignant highlight of the Lenten programme was a theatrical presentation on the life and mission of Fr. Stan Swamy. Written and directed by Fr. Nitin Prabhu, the play vividly portrayed the Jesuit priest’s unwavering commitment to tribal rights and social justice, underscoring the Gospel call to stand in solidarity with the marginalised and to resist injustice.

The spiritual dimension of the initiative was further deepened through a “Living Way of the Cross,” which invited the faithful into an immersive and prayerful encounter with the suffering of Christ. The enactment resonated deeply with participants, connecting Christ’s passion with contemporary human struggles.

Contrary to common perceptions of youth disengagement, the programme witnessed enthusiastic participation, with young people dedicating weeks of preparation and consciously stepping away from digital distractions to invest in community-centred action. Their involvement reflected a renewed sense of responsibility toward both faith and society.

The initiative received strong support from Sr. Jesu Mary of the Holy Family Congregation, who accompanied and guided the young women, while Fr. Joachin contributed to the design and communication efforts. The active involvement of volunteers, parish elders, and benefactors further strengthened the initiative.

As the Lenten season progresses, the Ellis Nagar experience stands out as a model of youth-led pastoral innovation, demonstrating how faith formation, when coupled with social consciousness, can inspire meaningful transformation within the Church and beyond.
