Lent Draws Faithful Closer to God, Says Bishop Gerald Lobo at Udupi Unity Prayer Meet

Udupi, April 1, 2026: As the Church enters the sacred season of Lent, Bishop Gerald Lobo called on the faithful to embrace the period as a time of deeper communion with God through prayer, fasting, and acts of charity.

Addressing an ecumenical prayer gathering at UBM Ebenezer Church, the bishop underscored the spiritual significance of the Lenten journey, describing it as an opportunity for inner renewal and disciplined faith. The event, organised under the theme “From Hosanna to the Cross,” brought together Christians from various denominations in a shared expression of unity and devotion.

“The Lenten season serves as a guide for Christians to grow closer to God through prayer, fasting, and charity,” Bishop Lobo said, highlighting the transformative dimension of the season.

Reflecting on the approaching Holy Week, he described it as a profoundly sacred time for meditating on the passion and death of Christ. He urged believers to draw strength from the Cross, encouraging them to face life’s trials with perseverance and trust in God while faithfully carrying their personal burdens.

Emphasising the redemptive power of Christ’s sacrifice, the bishop concluded with a prayer invoking blessings upon all, recalling Jesus’ saving mission for humanity.

The gathering also featured scriptural reflections led by Fr. Rock D’Souza and Brother Ramesh, both of whom reinforced the spiritual call to conversion and renewal during Lent.

A prayerful atmosphere prevailed throughout the evening as choirs from different churches across the region led the congregation in hymns, fostering a spirit of communal worship.

Clergy from Catholic and UBM churches, along with lay faithful and community leaders, participated in the event, reflecting a strong sense of Christian unity.

The prayer meet served as a reminder of Lent’s enduring message—inviting believers to reflection, resilience, and a renewed commitment to faith as they journey towards the Cross.
