Bengaluru, February 28, 2026 — Emphasising the moral responsibility of faith communities in safeguarding democratic values, Church leaders from across Karnataka gathered in the State capital for the Annual General Body Meeting of the Catholic Council of Karnataka. Held at Subodhana (KROSS), the meeting brought together nearly 90 representatives from 14 dioceses for a day of reflection, dialogue, and civic commitment.
Presiding over the assembly, Archbishop Peter Machado underscored that Christians cannot remain passive observers in public life. He called upon the faithful to actively participate in democratic processes, uphold constitutional values, and engage responsibly in local self-governance at a time when these principles face increasing scrutiny.
Offering a legal perspective, Justice Michael D’Cunha outlined the constitutional protections available to minorities and explained the remedies accessible when these rights are challenged. He encouraged structured and informed responses, highlighting initiatives such as peace clubs in educational institutions, legal aid mechanisms, awareness campaigns, and collaboration with civil society organisations.
Addressing the gathering, Advocate Clifton D’Rozario reflected on the enduring relevance of the Constitution’s Preamble, cautioning against attempts to weaken its foundational safeguards. He urged the community to cultivate informed civic engagement and sustained organisational preparedness to defend constitutional principles.
Discussions also focused on grassroots democracy and the importance of participation in forthcoming local body elections, including Panchayat, Zilla Parishad, and municipal corporations. Speakers stressed that engagement at the local level is integral to preserving pluralism and promoting inclusive development. Dioceses were encouraged to undertake structured preparations to strengthen democratic participation from the grassroots.
The meeting concluded with a coordinated action plan aimed at advancing constitutional awareness, legal literacy, and organised civic participation across the State. Participants affirmed that faith communities, rooted in spiritual values, have a constructive role in strengthening democratic institutions and fostering responsible citizenship in contemporary India.
The assembly also acknowledged the meticulous organisation of the programme under the leadership of Clara Fernandes, Secretary of the Catholic Council of Karnataka and Regional Secretary of the Laity Commission, whose coordination ensured structured deliberations and active diocesan participation.
