Karnataka Christian Community Urges CM D.K. Shivakumar to Repeal Anti-Conversion Bill

BENGALURU, August 14, 2026: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, accompanied by Energy Minister K.J. George, paid a courtesy visit to the Archbishop’s House in Bengaluru and met Archbishop Peter Machado of Benguluru, the Auxiliary Bishops and priests. During the meeting, several matters concerning the Christian community and the Church were discussed.

A key issue raised during the meeting was the repeal of the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act 2022 otherwise referred to as the 'Anti-Conversion Bill'. Representatives of the Christian community urged the Chief Minister to fulfil the Congress government’s earlier assurance to repeal the legislation after returning to power.

The delegation, led by Archbishop Peter Machado, also reiterated its request for the nomination of one Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) to represent the Christian community and sought one per cent reservation exclusively for Christians under the Backward Class category.

Several other issues affecting the Church and the Christian community, particularly those relating to property tax and land, were also brought to the Chief Minister’s attention.

Speaking to Catholic Connect, the PRO of the Archbishop said that it was primarily a courtesy call during which several concerns of the Christian community were presented to the Chief Minister. He said that the Chief Minister was receptive to the representations and assured the delegation that he would look into the matters raised.

Regarding the Anti-Conversion Bill, the PRO recalled the assurance given by the Congress leadership, while in opposition, that the legislation would be repealed if the party returned to power.

“Therefore, we emphasised that the government should repeal the Bill at any cost,” he said.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Archbishop Peter Machado assured the Chief Minister of the Christian community’s continued prayers for peace, unity and harmony in Karnataka, as well as for the success of the various works and initiatives undertaken by the state government.
