Mangaluru, May 13, 2026: In a commendable expression of ecological responsibility inspired by faith, the Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM), Mangaluru units, joined hands with the Forest Department to undertake a large-scale mangrove plantation drive along the coastal stretches of Kallapu and Thokkottu.
The initiative, coordinated by ICYM Mangaluru South, ECD, and City deaneries, brought together young volunteers from various parishes in a shared mission to safeguard creation. The programme highlighted the urgent need to protect fragile coastal ecosystems through sustainable environmental practices.
Mangroves, often described as nature’s shield against coastal erosion, play a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. By planting nearly 5,000 saplings, the youth made a tangible contribution to strengthening the coastline while promoting awareness about environmental stewardship.
Forest officials, along with ICYM leaders and volunteers, actively participated in the drive, working in a spirit of collaboration and service. Their efforts reflected a growing commitment among Catholic youth to respond to the Church’s call for care of creation, echoing the vision articulated in Laudato Si'.
Beyond the physical act of planting, the initiative served as a formative experience, encouraging young people to take leadership in environmental conservation and to embrace sustainable lifestyles. It stood as a witness to how faith-driven action can contribute meaningfully to the protection of the earth, our common home.
