From Peter to Francis: The Most Popular and Unused Papal Names

Vatican, 6th May 2025: Throughout history, some papal names have been chosen repeatedly, while others have never appeared. Among the most favored are Pius, Gregory, John, Benedict, Innocent, Leo, and Clement. Strikingly, no Pope has ever taken the name Peter, out of reverence for the apostle who was the first Pontiff.

The act of renaming is deeply symbolic, akin to a "second birth" into the unique ministry of the Bishop of Rome. Some names carry theological weight; others evoke periods of peace or reform. Notably absent from papal history are names like Joseph, James, Andrew, and Luke. This tradition showcases how names are used to inspire, honor, and set the tone for each papacy.

Each choice adds to the rich lineage of the Church, with every name echoing values and leadership styles of past pontificates.
