Film on Pope Leo XIV’s Missionary Days in Peru to Be Released Today

VATICAN CITY, June 20, 2025: Vatican Media will be releasing a new documentary, León de Perú (“Leo of Peru”), at 5:00 PM Rome time today, tracing the missionary journey of Pope Leo XIV—formerly Robert Francis Prevost—during his time serving in Peru. The film, produced by the Editorial Directorate of the Vatican's Dicastery for Communication, will premiere on Vatican News' YouTube channel and other international media platforms. It will be available in Spanish, English, and Italian.

The documentary explores the years Bishop Prevost spent in key regions of Peru, including Chulucanas, Trujillo, Lima, Callao, and Chiclayo. Through testimonies of local residents and collaborators, the film highlights his pastoral care and deep social engagement, offering insight into the work that shaped the man who would later become the 267th pope of the Catholic Church.

Journalists accredited with the Holy See Press Office have been invited to attend a special advance screening of the documentary at 4:00 PM in the Vatican Film Library.

León de Perú was directed by journalists Salvatore Cernuzio, Felipe Herrera-Espaliat, and Jaime Vizcaíno Haro.

The documentary marks the first official Vatican media production dedicated to the newly elected pontiff, barely a month into his papacy, and serves as a tribute to his decades-long mission in Latin America.
