Bhadravati, February 23, 2026 — An awareness programme blending faith formation with civic responsibility brought renewed focus on participatory Church life and democratic engagement at Our Lady of Velankanni Church on February 22. Jointly organised by the Laity Commission and the BEC Commission, the initiative gathered 75 participants for sessions on “Living Out Synodality” and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the Electoral Roll.
The programme aimed to deepen understanding of a synodal Church while raising awareness about the importance of maintaining updated electoral records. By addressing both themes, organisers underscored the connection between shared responsibility within the Church and active participation in democratic processes.
Fr. Steevan D’sa, parish priest and diocesan secretary for the Laity Commission, offered a comprehensive reflection on the meaning and mission of a synodal Church. He described synodality as a way of being Church rooted in participation, communion and collective responsibility, encouraging the faithful to move beyond passive membership toward active engagement in ecclesial life and mission.
The civic dimension was addressed by Sr. Theresa Mascarenhas, who explained the procedures of the Special Intensive Revision of the Electoral Roll. Her presentation guided participants through the process of voter registration while emphasising the importance of accurate electoral records and informed citizenship in safeguarding democratic systems.
Organisers ensured the sessions remained interactive and accessible, helping participants connect the principles of synodality with practical responsibilities in society. Moments of reflection and dialogue enabled attendees to translate concepts into concrete action.
Participants concluded the programme expressing renewed motivation to practise synodality within their parish communities and to take personal responsibility in the electoral revision process. The initiative highlighted how a listening and participatory Church can foster conscientious citizens, strengthening both ecclesial life and the broader social fabric.
