Mariagiri, February 28, 2026: Responding to the growing challenges faced by migrant families, the Diocese of Srikakulam organised a two-day diocesan-level Awareness Programme on Migration and Human Trafficking under the leadership of Rayarala Vijaya Kumar.
The programme commenced with a prayer led by Sr. Archana, diocesan in charge of Migration. Msgr. Dusi Devaraj welcomed the participants and highlighted the urgency of addressing migration-related vulnerabilities within the region.
Speakers noted that a significant number of faithful from the diocese migrate to various parts of the Telugu states in search of livelihood opportunities. Owing to the economically fragile condition of many communities, migration has become a common survival strategy. However, this movement frequently exposes individuals—especially women and children—to exploitation and human trafficking.
During the sessions, Bishop Rayarala Vijaya Kumar actively engaged participants in examining the root causes of migration and the structural factors contributing to vulnerability. Catechists and parish leaders presented findings from a baseline survey conducted across several parishes, offering a clearer picture of the realities confronting migrant families.
Discussions focused on strengthening preventive mechanisms, building grassroots awareness, and developing parish-based support systems to protect migrants and their families. Participants shared practical recommendations aimed at enhancing community vigilance and pastoral accompaniment.
In his concluding address, the Bishop expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the programme’s success, particularly Msgr. Dusi Devaraj, Fr. Dominic Thumma, Fr. Vijay Reddy, and Sr. Archana for their committed service to the poor and vulnerable.
The programme concluded with the celebration of the Holy Mass, marking a renewed diocesan commitment to safeguarding human dignity and protecting migrant communities.
