Belgaum, May 18, 2026: The Diocese of Belgaum observed the 60th World Day of Social Communications with a solemn Eucharistic celebration and a renewed appeal to use media as a tool for truth, compassion, and evangelisation in today’s digital age.
The celebration was organised by the Social Communications Commission of the Diocese of Belgaum in communion with the Universal Church and was held on May 17 during the 8:00 a.m. Holy Eucharistic Celebration at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Family Rosary of Fatima, Camp, Belgaum.
Catholic media professionals and members of the diocesan Social Communications Commission led the entrance procession, highlighting the Church’s mission of proclaiming the Good News through various forms of communication and media ministry.
Bishop Derek Fernandes of Belgaum presided over the Eucharistic celebration and reflected in his homily on the importance of preserving authentic human communication in a fast-paced digital world. Referring to the theme of the World Day of Social Communications, he stressed that communication must always remain rooted in “truth, humanity, compassion, and responsibility.”
The Bishop reminded the faithful that every human voice and every human face possesses dignity and value. He encouraged communicators, especially those involved in media ministry, to use modern technology and digital platforms responsibly to spread hope, unity, faith, and the message of Christ.
He also appreciated the commitment and creativity of Catholic media personnel who continue to serve the Church through different communication platforms and apostolates.
The observance inspired the faithful to become responsible communicators and witnesses of the Gospel, reaffirming the Church’s mission of using media as a powerful means of evangelisation and meaningful human connection.
