Christian Leaders Unite in Trichy, Tamil Nadu to Plan Statewide Fasting Prayer

Trichy, October 18, 2025: The ecumenical spirit was alive in Trichy today as Christian leaders from across Tamil Nadu and the Pondy-Cuddalore region gathered at TMR Residency for a planning meeting ahead of the “Bless Tamil Nadu – 2026” Seven-Hour Fasting Prayer initiative. The meeting, attended by over 350 pastors, was led by Brother Mohan C. Lazarus and saw participation from key ecumenical figures representing various denominations and independent churches.

The gathering began with collective prayer for the State of Tamil Nadu, the government, and the forthcoming elections. Participants sought divine guidance and intercession for peace, justice, and prosperity in the region. The central focus of the meeting was the preparation for the 07-Hour Fasting Prayer Chain scheduled to take place simultaneously across all Taluk centres in Tamil Nadu on 26 January 2026.

The large-scale initiative aims to unite believers in a shared act of fasting and prayer, invoking blessings upon the State and its people. The organisers emphasised the need for cooperation among all Christian denominations and faith leaders to ensure the success of the programme. “Let us come together in faith and prayer for our land. Praise the Lord Jesus Christ! Amen,” the organisers stated, affirming their collective mission.

Representing the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) Commission for Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue, Fr. J. Benadict Barnabas, Brother Francis Bastian, and Brother Vincent Rajan participated in the planning session. Their involvement reflected the TNBC’s continued commitment to promoting inter-church unity and dialogue among diverse Christian communities.

The Commission for Ecumenism and Inter-Religious Dialogue, which has long collaborated with mainline churches such as the Tamil Evangelical Lutheran Church (TELC) and the Church of South India (CSI), is now broadening its outreach. Following the guidance of the final Synodal Document, the TNBC Commission has undertaken fresh initiatives to strengthen relationships with New Pentecostal and Independent churches across the State.

Fr. Barnabas highlighted that these efforts represent a significant step forward in the spirit of Christian unity. “Our journey together is expanding beyond traditional partnerships. The Synodal vision encourages inclusivity, collaboration, and a renewed sense of shared mission among all who follow Christ,” he noted.

The “Bless Tamil Nadu 2026” fasting prayer initiative stands as a landmark ecumenical movement, reflecting the unity of purpose among Christian leaders to pray for the welfare of society and governance. With wide participation expected from clergy and laity alike, the organisers expressed optimism that this united act of prayer will bring spiritual renewal and blessings to the State.

As the Christian community of Tamil Nadu prepares for this statewide day of prayer on Republic Day, 2026, faith leaders have called on believers to actively participate, reaffirming their commitment to peace, service, and divine intercession for the good of all.
