Cardinals Hold Third General Congregation and Begin Conversation about Church

Vatican City, 24 April 2025 – The 113 Cardinals currently gathered in Rome held their third General Congregation on Thursday morning, during which key decisions were made regarding the forthcoming conclave to elect a new pope.

The Cardinals announced that Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández will now preside over the Mass on the sixth day of the Novemdiales, replacing Cardinal Kevin Farrell in the liturgical role.

They also confirmed the names of those delivering the two pre-conclave meditations. Father Donato Ogliari, O.S.B., Abbot of St Paul Outside the Walls, will offer the first meditation on Monday. Cardinal Raniero Cantalamessa, Preacher Emeritus of the Papal Household, has been appointed to deliver the second meditation at the start of the conclave, the date of which remains unconfirmed.

In addition to planning the spiritual preparation for the conclave, the Cardinals began a broader discussion about the Church's role in the modern world. The next General Congregation is scheduled for Friday morning at 9:00 am.

Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office, told journalists that as of 1:00 pm Thursday, approximately 61,000 mourners had paid their respects to the late Pope Francis. He noted that St Peter’s Basilica is expected to close at midnight on Thursday unless crowd sizes necessitate an extension.

Following the Pope’s funeral, which will be held on Saturday, 26 April, a Rosary will take place at 9:00 pm in front of the Basilica of St Mary Major. Bruni added that Pope Francis’ burial will be conducted in private.

Beginning on the morning of Sunday, 27 April, the faithful will be able to visit the Pope’s tomb at the Marian Basilica.
