Anticipatory Bail Granted to Sr. Bincy in Conversion Case

Kunkuri, Chhattisgarh, 24 April 2025 : The Honourable High Court of Chhattisgarh granted anticipatory bail today to Sister Bincy Joseph, Principal of Holy Cross Nursing College, Kunkuri, in connection with an ongoing case of alleged forced religious conversion. The development brought a sense of relief to hundreds in the Christian community, who have stood in support of Sr. Bincy since the FIR was registered earlier this month.

Reacting to the court's decision, Sr. Veena, Provincial of Holy Cross Nursing College, expressed gratitude, saying, “I thank the Almighty God and the hundreds who prayed and supported us. I request that we continue to pray for Sr. Bincy.”

The case sparked widespread concern in the Jashpur district, culminating in a peaceful protest held earlier today in Kunkuri town. Hundreds of Christians gathered, carrying banners and raising slogans demanding justice for Sr. Bincy. The demonstrators described the charges as false and called for the immediate withdrawal of the FIR.

The allegations were made by a third-year nursing student, who claimed Sr. Bincy pressured her to convert and become a nun. Sr. Bincy denied the claims, stating the student was retaliating after she refused to sign her certificate due to inadequate attendance and training.

A fact-finding team visited the college on 4 April, and an FIR was filed on 6 April. Her earlier bail plea was rejected on 11 April by a local court, deepening concerns in the community before today’s relief from the High Court.

Today’s ruling has renewed hope among supporters seeking a fair resolution. Many view it as a step towards justice and the protection of minority rights.
