Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma to Attend Pope Francis’ Funeral in Vatican

Meghalaya, 24 April 2025: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma is set to attend the funeral of Pope Francis at St Peter’s Square, Vatican City, on 26 April, Saturday at 10 A.M. (1:30 P.M. IST), as confirmed by the College of Cardinals.

An official confirmed on 22 April that Sangma, currently in New Delhi, is en route to Rome for the solemn occasion.

Sangma had earlier met Pope Francis during a visit to the Vatican in 2022. Dignitaries from across the globe, including former US President Donald Trump, are also expected to attend the funeral.

In honour of the late pontiff, the Christian-majority state of Meghalaya is observing official mourning. The Archbishop Victor Lyngdoh of Shillong has released guidelines for parishes and Catholic institutions during this mourning period. A special mass was celebrated on 22 April at the Cathedral Church in Shillong.
