Bhopal Archdiocese Marks Vailankanni Novena and Nativity of Mary

Bhopal, September 9, 2026: Prayer, Marian devotion and a renewed call to trust in God marked the Vailankanni Novena and the celebration of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary across the Archdiocese of Bhopal from August 29 to September 8.

Parishes across the archdiocese observed the annual novena in honour of Our Lady of Good Health, popularly known as Vailankanni Mata, with daily Masses, Rosary prayers, Marian hymns, preaching and other devotional activities.

The novena brought together parish communities, families, religious congregations and devotees who sought Mary’s intercession for healing, peace and blessings. Particular prayers were offered for the sick and suffering, families and the needs of society.

At the Infant Jesus Shrine in Bhopal, the observance began with the traditional blessing and hoisting of the Vailankanni flag. Archbishop Durairaj, SVD, of Bhopal presided over the inaugural Mass and reflected on Mary’s faith, surrender and obedience to God’s will. He encouraged the faithful to follow her example of trusting God.

The novena concluded on September 8 with celebrations marking the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Parishes across the archdiocese organised solemn Masses, processions, Rosary prayers and thanksgiving services. Churches were decorated and faithful gathered to honour Mary and seek her maternal intercession.

The feast was also an occasion to reflect on Mary’s role in salvation history. Her birth was presented as a sign of hope and joy, leading the faithful to consider the virtues associated with her life, including faith, humility, obedience, purity, prayer and service.

The celebrations emphasised that devotion to Mary is ultimately directed towards Christ. The faithful were reminded of her instruction at Cana: “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5).

The observance concluded with a call to carry the spirit of the novena into daily life by trusting God, serving others with compassion and remaining faithful amid difficulties. The celebrations thus became an invitation to live the Gospel through faith, hope, love and service.
