Nagpur, March 12, 2025 – The Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) convened a strategic meeting for BEC Regional Directors at the Pallottine Animation Centre in Nagpur on March 11, 2025. The gathering, attended by five bishops, 12 regional directors, diocesan coordinators, and members of the National Service Team, focused on the dissemination and implementation of the CCBI Pastoral Plan.
The session commenced with Fr. George Jacob, Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for BECs, extending a warm welcome to the attendees. BEC Directors from each region then presented updates on the initiatives they have undertaken to implement the CCBI Pastoral Plan within their respective regions, along with their future action plans. Many directors reported the successful execution of training programs across various diocesan levels to promote and empower BECs. Additionally, several directors highlighted that BECs within their jurisdictions have made significant strides toward becoming self-sustaining communities.
Reports also indicated that training sessions have been conducted in seminaries across dioceses in various regions to nurture the future of BECs and to support the establishment and strengthening of new communities. Some dioceses noted significant progress in interfaith collaboration through the creation of Basic Human Communities, fostering unity beyond religious boundaries.
Despite these advancements, several dioceses acknowledged facing challenges, including restrictions on holding BEC meetings. However, the resilience of these communities remains strong. Some of these dioceses have responded by adapting the Gospel Sharing practice to better resonate with local cultures. Some of these methods include incorporating Charismatic prayer elements which has led to greater participation among members of BECs.
A key proposal discussed during the meeting was the establishment of an annual "BEC Day" to recognize and celebrate the contributions of BECs within the Catholic Church in India. The proposal received widespread support from attendees.
The gathering concluded with a session on ‘Spiritual Conversations’ in small groups, emphasizing the Synodal Church’s call for dialogue and discernment. Inspired by the discussions, the Regional Coordinators departed with renewed dedication to advancing the CCBI Pastoral Plan and strengthening the mission of BECs across India.
