Calcutta, 12 March, 2025: Parishes across the Archdiocese of Calcutta are embracing a new initiative as part of the preparations for the Jubilee Year 2025. In a pastoral letter, Archbishop Thomas D’Souza proposed that a _"Jubilee Cross in every parish travel from house to house throughout the year,"_ fostering a deeper spiritual connection among the faithful.
Following this vision, parishes have begun crafting replicas of the Diocesan Cross, a distinctive wooden structure adorned with a traditional textile print, protected by acrylic, and secured with four steel bolts symbolising the wounds of Christ. A metal medallion featuring the official Jubilee 2025 logo is affixed at the centre, completing the design.
The original Diocesan Cross is venerated at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Rosary in Murgihatta, Kolkata—one of the four designated pilgrimage centres in the archdiocese. It was here that the archdiocese inaugurated its Jubilee celebrations in January.
While parishes are not required to replicate the exact materials of the Diocesan Cross, they are encouraged to maintain its visual unity, ensuring its presence is recognisable throughout the Holy Year.
"Our archdiocesan cross merges Christian faith with tradition, reflecting the rich heritage of the diocesan region," said Fr. Farrell Shah, Director of Social Communications.
This initiative aims to strengthen faith communities and reinforce the significance of the Jubilee Year as the Cross moves from home to home, bringing the message of renewal and hope.
