Archdiocese of Bhopal Commemorates First Archbishop with Solemn Memorial Mass

Bhopal, March 20, 2026: The Archdiocese of Bhopal came together in a spirit of prayer and gratitude to mark the death anniversary of its first Archbishop, Eugene Louis D’Souza, with a solemn Memorial Mass on March 18 at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral.

Priests, religious and lay faithful gathered in large numbers for the Eucharistic celebration, which became a moment of collective remembrance and reflection on the life and enduring legacy of a pioneering Church leader in central India.

The liturgy highlighted Archbishop D’Souza’s foundational role in shaping the Archdiocese following its establishment on September 13, 1963, by Pope Paul VI. Appointed as its first Archbishop, he brought with him extensive pastoral experience from his earlier service as Bishop and later Archbishop of Nagpur.

For more than three decades, Archbishop D’Souza guided the Archdiocese with a strong missionary vision, fostering both spiritual growth and social outreach. His leadership was marked by a commitment to institution-building, the promotion of vocations, and the holistic development of the faithful.

Born on November 15, 1917, and ordained a priest on September 29, 1944, he dedicated his life to the service of the Church. Even after his retirement on May 20, 1994, he remained a source of inspiration until his passing on March 18, 2003.

Remembered for a legacy often described as one of “love and courage,” Archbishop D’Souza continues to influence the life of the Archdiocese. The Memorial Mass provided the faithful an opportunity not only to pray for the repose of his soul but also to renew their commitment to the values he embodied.

The Archdiocese expressed deep gratitude for his pioneering leadership and reaffirmed its resolve to carry forward his vision, ensuring that his spirit of faith, service and pastoral dedication continues to guide the Church in Bhopal.
