Archbishop Peter Machado Urges Communicators to be Prophets of the New Generation

Bengaluru, November 4, 2025: Over 60 media professionals, diocesan and regional communication secretaries from various dioceses gathered in Bengaluru for the Jubilee of Communicators held on November 4 and 5. The inaugural Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Peter Machado of Bangalore, who also serves as the Vice President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI). He reflected on the Church’s mission of communication, urging them to be “prophets of the new generation” who proclaim hope.

In his homily, citing the Gospel of the day, Archbishop Machado spoke about being prophets of this generation. He reflected on the Church’s communication mission, remarking, “We often do so many marketing and yet nothing happens. If the Church must market anything, it must market hope.”

He emphasised that the Church’s greatest contribution is not in its “huge grand cathedrals” but in the hope it brings, affirming, “Christianity is the religion of hope.”

Highlighting that the Church must be concerned not just about the masses but also about individuals, the Archbishop reminded communicators that true communication happens when people feel personally seen and loved. He noted that many people are leaving the Church, and communicators have the mission to bring them back—not through grand promotions, but through authentic witness and stories that inspire hope.

He reminded the faithful that silence can sometimes speak louder than words, saying that even moments that seem like “failures” in communication can carry deeper meaning and touch hearts.

He also cautioned against reducing Christianity to a message of comfort or prosperity. “Christ could have died in any way, but He chose the Cross,” he said, stressing that the essence of Christianity is hope born through the Cross and a commitment to truth.

Concluding his homily, Archbishop Machado urged communicators to remain steadfast in their mission, carrying the light of faith wherever they serve, and to always be “beacons and prophets of hope.”
